Hopsin has the generic rapper background story: stuck in special education classes with teachers that only reinforced the idea that he’d go nowhere, dropped out of school at 2004 with no money and no friends. Eventually Hopsin got a hold of a computer a Wal-mart microphone and Fruity Loops and began making music. The outcome is a refreshing new face in the rap game to rival the Kendrick Lamars, the El Ps, and the Schoolboy Q’s of the world. With a flow that’s reminiscent of early Eminem and occasionally Tyler the Creator, Hopsin is basically intelligent horror-core. He’s still a work in progress, but his early raps show some fantastic ability, and a unique talent to reflect on the status of the rap world in general. He tackles that topic in my favorite song of his, ‘Ill Mind of Hopsin 5,’ in which he tears down rap culture for the affect it has on society. Check out my two favorites below and treat yourself to more of Hopsin.
