Michael Kiwanuka at World Cafe Live, Philly [Concert Review]

I enjoy going to concerts with little to no expectations, but this was not the case, on Friday when I went down to World Cafe Live in Philly to see Michael Kiwanuka. I was anxious to see BBC’s Sound of 2012 artist perform, and expected nothing less than the effortless yet soulful singing Kiwanuka delivers in all of his songs. And he didn’t disappoint, Kiwanuka and his band played some great folk-blues and soul. He added in personal stories about his life and music which made for a friendly atmosphere as well. I’ve already share a live performance of Michael Kiwanuka covering Hendrix’s “May This Be Love”, which he did again in Philly, so instead I’ll direct you to a live 6-song set available on NPR HERE. It’s only 23 minutes compared to the over-one-hour set he gave us Friday night, which including a brief solo performance by Kiwanuka playing some of his songs as he originally wrote them. I really recommend you catch Michael on his few remaining tour dates if he’s playing near you. Below are his remaining tour dates.

June 19:
Danforth Music Hall
Toronto, ON, CAN

August 3:
Lollapalooza
Chicago, IL

August 7:
Bluebird Theater
Denver, CO

August 13:
Troubadour
West Hollywood, CA

August 14:
Music Box at the Fonda
Los Angeles, CA
