Icelandic artist, Sóley creates a warm and inviting folk sound aided by electronic sampling and production. If you are acquainted with two other Icelandic stars, Sigur Ros and Of Monsters and Men, then think of Sóley as a happy medium. Though that’s not to say she isn’t creative in her own right, “I’ll Drown” is a great example, as Sóley toys with the peaceful and catchy melody throughout the song. She will be touring the East Coast this fall with Of Monsters and Men, and will have an opportunity to win over a U.S. fan base increasingly eager for folk tunes. Her songs are intensely sincere and warm, as they must be, in order to carry one through a cold, dark Icelandic winter. Playing the piano in minor, Sóley creates an intimate world similar to Regina Spektor. Like Spektor, Sóley has a very diverse range of sounds, and I recommend you listen to more than the 2 songs I’ve shared below. For example, her live performance in Berlin.
