While I’m usually more of a fan of chilled out folk or indie music, every once and awhile a band comes along that adds some much-needed energy into my daily music feed. Canterbury-based quartet Syd Arthur is a self-proclaimed psychedelic rock band. The best way to describe their sound is to imagine if today’s digital music techniques existed in the 60′s and 70′s. While they fall under the genre of psychedelic rock, I’d argue that the airy, melodic vocals push them closer to psychedelic folk. Either way, their sound, which comes from bass, percussion, drums, violin, and mandolin, is unique and shows a true artistic talent. Their first full-length album, On and On, was just released July 3rd and it’s worth getting the whole album. For those of you who feel that good music hasn’t been made since the old days, Syd Arthur will renew your faith that psychedelic music can still be made, and made well.
