The Heavy at Brighton Music Hall [Concert Review]

The Heavy
As someone who prefers folk, and mellow, singer-songwriter types, it is great to have an opportunity for an entirely different live music experience. The Heavy, an energetic soul-infused rock band, provided an excellent breath of fresh air for my oft-concerted ears last week at the Brighton Music Hall in Allston. With hit songs that get more airtime in commercials and movies, due to their catchy-as-hell soul-ridden beats, I wasn’t sure how well the band would be able to control the audience. Thanks to lead-singer, Kelvin Swaby, they had no issues in doing so. His high-octane personality had the often subdued venue bumping and justified the calling of the local fire marshal prior to the show. By getting the crowd involved in nearly every song the Heavy performed, the band prevented the awkward lulls that can bridge the gap between hits for an indie-band. All in all, the band had way to much fun, Swaby commanded the stage like a maestro and may have had the best night of anyone. Definitely a hidden gem of a live performance if the Heavy come to your home town, be sure to check them out, and keep your eyes on the jovial saxophone duo who’s bellowing often carries the Heavy’s signature beats. Thanks to the concert, I have a new favorite song by the Heavy, “Cause for Alarm”, with an excellent live video for your viewing below.
