The xx graced us with another offering off their upcoming sophomore effort, ‘Coexist.’ This time, ‘Chained,’ deviates a little more from The xx’s debut. I believe it is the natural progression of the band. First we were given Angels, which could have fit nearly perfectly within the 2009 release, but differed slightly. Then Chained comes and shows the band evolving more so, adding depth to their sound, creating a ‘muddier’ and fuller sound. The cymbals in this song give it a depth that we haven’t seen from the foursome. Although this song differs it gives me hope for a great new sound developing on this album, without leaving behind the keys, like the back and forth male/female vocals, that made them a success in the future.
